CSC150H: Accelerated Introduction to Computer Programming -- Fall 2008

Overview

Welcome to the course webpage for the fall 2008 term of CSC150H, Accelerated Introduction to Computer Science. Here is the course description:

An accelerated course covering object-oriented topics from CSC108H1 (classes, objects, methods and fields, and program design), as well as all the material of CSC148H1. Suitable for students with a solid programming background in Turing, C, Scheme, or a similar language, who are willing to accept a heavier workload than in CSC108H1 and CSC148H1.

Make sure you read the course information sheet. Among other things, it contains a schedule of tests and assignment due dates for the term, and covers information about the late policy.

Please also check the Announcements page at least a couple times a week, especially in weeks that assignments are due.

Labs and CDF help

You are welcome to use any of the CDF labs to do your work. They are located mostly in the Bahen building: BA3200, BA2200, BA2210, BA2220, BA2240, BA227. BA3175 and BA3195 may also be available, but these are the closed labs used for lab sessions for a few courses. Please read the guide for new students for more information.

If you have questions about the lab machines or using the software, please try the Help Centre. The TAs there are most helpful.

Is this the course for you?

To help you decide whether 150 is the first-year programming course for you, see the Department's Guide to First Year Course Selection, along with the prerequisites and exclusions in the next section. Briefly:

CSC 108
You have little or no programming experience. Afterwards, take CSC 148 to continue with Computer Science.
CSC 148
You have passed CSC 108, or have good object oriented programming skills in Java or C++.
CSC 150
You have solid programming skills, but little or no object oriented experience. (You do not need to know Python.)

To get a better feel for these courses you are welcome to attend any of their lectures (space-permitting) during the first two weeks before the last course add date. Feel free to talk to the various instructors about which course to choose.

In addition, if you enroll in CSC 148 or 150 you have until the October 5 to decide to switch from CSC 148/150 to CSC 108. If you decide to switch, see your Registrar for details and contact the CSC 108 instructor to find out how your missed CSC 108 work will be handled (your marks in CSC 148/150 will then not be used).
